Beatiful Butterflies

Watz up our name is
Amber, jade, Garicia we decided to write this on the blog because we thought that we should tell you about our butterflies. We have been raising butterflies in our classroom. In the class we watched in the larva into the pupa and then the imago(adult). Then finally the beautiful butterfly. We waited about a week in a half . We were very excited . Every day we came to the back table and seen if they had hatched yet. Then one morning,we came into the room and we saw 4 little butterflies flying every where, going wild. But there was one that went into his/her cocoon late. Then on May 3,2010 it hatched. And it was a happy day for them.

Persey Harvin,Tim tebow,and Brandon Spikes

Persey Harvin. To me he is the first NFL player to be the greatiest. Persey plays on the Vikings. I think he made the team better. Brandon Spikes is going to make the Paterots better. Tim Tebow wanted to go to the jagwiers but he went to the Broncoes. I think that Ely Manning is better than Paton Manning.

Adrian and Fidels Track and Field Meet

We where in the sac and block relay. Fidel won 2nd and 3rd place for the sac relay. Adrian won 1st and 3rd in the sac relay, but none in block relay. Niether did Fidel. But it was off the chain. another kid got injured and had to get sent to the hospital from a broken arm . And one kid almost passed out because of dehydration. But it was still off the chain! It was real fun racing though me and Adrian were tired we liked racing. We needed to drink alot of water so we couldn't have dehydration.

Puberty

In 5th grade we have learned about puberty. Sweat glands produce more sweat. And how your vocal chordes grow and you crack and sqeak alot. How you may start to grow more hair on your head and some under your armpits. How fast girls and boys develop. And that pimples may start to braeak out more if you don't wash your face well.

Human Growth and Development

It all started when Ms.Lipsky gave us a paper that was about human growth and development. Two days later,we started to learn about our body's we had a test about it. After it was over the teachers separated us boys in one room and the girls in another room. We learned about puberty, and we also got to learn things that we didn't know.

Celebrating Earth Day!

Our school decorated brown grocery bags with Earth Day messages. The grocery bags were borrowed from Publix and will be returned so that shoppers requesting "paper" will receive one of our bags and messages. Take a look at the Lipsky Team's Earth Day Bags below.

The idea came from www.EarthDayBags.org visit their site!
Lipsky Team if you could tell the world one message on Earth Day what would it be?

Hurricanes!

This year we were fortunate and did not have any hurricanes effect us in Gainesville. Last year, two days of the first week of school were canceled because of Tropical Storm Fay.

Find out more about hurricanes by visiting the FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) website for kids. I'm not going to tell you where to find the answers to these questions, so you need to put on your detective hat and get to work.

Comment with your answers:

1. Has there ever been a hurricane named after you?

2. What are three things you should pack in a disaster supply kit?

3. What are Hurricane Hunters?

If you have extra time you should try the hurricane house game or check out the hurricane cartoons.

Look at that growth!

Well we haven't updated as often as we planned, but for awhile there was nothing to tell. The beans took a few days to sprout, and some still haven't! Check out the pictures of the plants that have not only sprouted, but flourished!

These beans had all their needs met. They were watered and sat on the windowsill in the sun. Some of our beans are just beginning to grow.

Why do you think the beans are growing at different rates? Why do you think some have not even sprouted? If we planted new beans what could we do differently? Can't wait to hear from ya!

Plant Project- Day 1

Today we began growing bean plants. Half the class is growing lima beans planted in soil, and the other half is growing four pinto beans in wet paper towels. Here are some thoughts to consider:

- Will our plants grow indoors at 70 degrees? Should we put them outside where it is between 30-40 degrees?

- Our plants are not receiving any natural light (sunlight), will they still grow?

- How can you tell when to water your bean plant?

- Will the pinto beans grow, even though they are not planted in soil?
(Here are pictures of the two experiments on Day 1. Tune in for more updates on the plants from the experimenters themselves.)

What do you think? Comment with your thoughts.

Winter Break

Winter break is almost here! Everybody jump and cheer!

That was my short winter poem. :) Over the upcoming break I hope that you all get a lot of rest and have fun with your families and friends. Remember to be reading your non-fiction book.

During winter break I will be camping on the Gulf of Mexico. I am excited to make smores, read my book, and go on hikes. Then I am going to the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans to cheer on the Gators in Tim Tebow's last game. What are you doing over winter break?

I hope you all have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

It's time to take action!

Now that we've read Kofi Annan's speech about helping the environment take this quiz to find out how "green" you are.

How did you do? Personally, I got a 46% and it called me lazy. :( The truth is there are many small things (and big things) we could all do to help our environment. What can you think of that we could do to help?

Comment with your ideas and your green score if you want to share it. :)

Thanksgiving is almost here!

This week we only have two days of school, so that we can spend more time with our families for the Thanksgiving holiday. Thanksgiving always makes me reflect on the things in my life that I am thankful for. Here is a list of what I am thankful for:

my family
my friends
my students
my co-workers
my education and the experiences I have had in my life
my rights as an American
chocolate

Okay so the last one was a joke (kind of...), but all the others were real. I wake up every morning excited to begin another day. What is that you are thankful for? Comment with your thoughts.

The results are in...

The Lipsky Team recieved an email this morning from the official judges of the puppy naming contest, my parents. Read on to find out the puppy's name!

Dear Miss Lipsky and Miss Lipsky,

Thank you for helping us name our new puppy. Your classes are so creative and funny too.

We enjoyed reading the lists and found many of the names to be good possibilities for the puppy's name.

Some of the names were very "Gatory" and others were very yummy (Fudge, Cookie, Brownie, Cupcake).

So here is our decision (drum roll please).

It's a tie!

Yes, we found one name on the Stephen Foster list and one of the Chet's Creek list that combine to match our puppy's personality.

So his name is Rowdy Blackjack (who is asleep on my lap as I type this e-mail)!

Both classes win and both classes will be getting the prizes when they return from the Thanksgiving break.

Thanks for your help.

It's electric!

In science, we are learning about electricity. First, we have to learn the new vocabulary terms.

Go to BrainPop and sign in using our class's username and password.

1. Click on Science.
2. Click on Energy.
3. Watch the Electric Circuits movie. Afterwards take the Review Quiz to check your understanding.
4. Watch the Electricity movie.
5. Then leave a comment here with the following answers:

  • When you flick a light switch on what is happening that we cannot see?

  • What charge do electrons have?

  • What is electricity?

If you finish early review what we were working on last week by watching the movies on Forms of Energy, Kinetic Energy, or Sound. Remember our science test is next Tuesday!

Brr!

Climate change could cause the ice peaks on Africa's Mount Kilimanjaro to disappear within the next 25 years! Glaciologists, scientists who study glaciers, say the peaks might be ice-free as soon as 2022, or by 2033 at the latest. 85% of the ice that was present in 1912 has disappeared. Scientists are making similar findings all around the world. A rise in temperatures is one of the reasons for the ice melting, but also human-caused climate change that has made for drier and less cloudy conditions than in the past are also causing the ice to shrink. The picture shows a remnant of what once was an ice field.
